Overview

The mucosal tissue surface, or mucosa, is a complex biological interface lining body cavities such as the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urogenital tracts (StatPearls, 2023). It serves as a primary barrier against environmental pathogens and toxins while facilitating essential processes like nutrient absorption and secretion (NIH, 2022). The surface is characterized by an epithelial layer often covered by a protective mucus gel composed primarily of mucin glycoproteins (PubMed, 2021). In clinical contexts, the mucosal surface is frequently the site of inflammatory diseases, such as ulcerative colitis, and serves as a portal for infectious agents (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2020). While not a discrete molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, it is a focal point for mucoadhesive drug delivery systems designed to prolong residence time and improve the bioavailability of local or systemic therapies (Journal of Controlled Release, 2019).

Mechanism of action

Drugs typically interact with the mucosal surface through mucoadhesion to glycoproteins, physical coating to provide a protective barrier against acid or pathogens, or by modulating epithelial permeability to facilitate drug transport.
