Overview

The mucous membrane of the pharynx is a specialized tissue lining the throat and pharynx, consisting of an epithelial surface supported by connective tissue and containing mucus-secreting glands. This membrane protects against mechanical abrasion, traps pathogens, lubricates the tissue for swallowing and breathing, and plays an important role in local immunity. It comprises multiple cell types, including barrier-forming epithelial cells and resident immune cells[7][5][4]. Although it is essential for health and the target of symptomatic therapies, it is not a molecular target suitable for drug development in itself. Drugs used in the throat and pharynx typically act on the local nerves, immune cells, or infectious organisms rather than on the mucous membrane as a distinct molecular entity.
