Mucus in the Respiratory Tract

Molecular classification
Complex Mixture, Glycoproteins (Mucins), Water, Ions, Proteins/Enzymes
01

Overview

Mucus in the respiratory tract is a complex secretion produced by goblet cells and submucosal glands lining the airways. It traps inhaled particles, protects airway epithelial surfaces, and facilitates their removal via mucociliary clearance. The primary macromolecular components are mucins (MUC5AC and MUC5B), along with water, ions, and proteins. Expectorants are agents that enhance the expulsion of bronchial secretions by increasing hydration and/or stimulating ciliary activity. Dysfunction contributes to respiratory diseases through impaired gas exchange and infection risk.
