Mucus Secretion

Molecular classification
Biological Process
01

Overview

Mucus secretion is the process by which specialized cells, primarily goblet cells and submucosal glands, produce and release mucus—a gel-like substance composed mainly of water and mucins. This process is essential for protecting epithelial surfaces, trapping pathogens and debris, and maintaining tissue hydration. Mucus secretion is regulated by neural and inflammatory signals. Dysregulation of mucus secretion contributes to various respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, including asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

Mechanism of action

Mucolytics: Break down mucus structure. Bronchodilators: Reduce airway constriction, facilitating mucus clearance. Anti-inflammatory drugs: Reduce inflammation and mucus hypersecretion.
