Overview
The mucus production pathway refers to the cellular and molecular processes responsible for synthesizing, secreting, and regulating mucus—a protective hydrogel that lines mucosal surfaces. The pathway involves mucin production by goblet cells, submucosal glands and club cells and regulated by immunologic/growth factor signaling, and neural input. The functions include barrier protection, particle/pathogen trapping/removal. Disruption or dysregulation of this pathway leads to diseases characterized by either excessive/thickened mucus production (asthma, COPD) or insufficient barrier function.
