Overview

Mucus secretion and bronchial smooth muscle refers to the integrated physiological components of the respiratory tract that regulate airway diameter and clearance (StatPearls, 2023). Bronchial smooth muscle tone is primarily controlled by the autonomic nervous system, where parasympathetic activity via muscarinic M3 receptors induces contraction, and sympathetic activity via beta-2 adrenergic receptors induces relaxation (NIH, 2022). Mucus secretion is a protective mechanism involving goblet cells and submucosal glands that trap inhaled particles for removal via the mucociliary escalator (Rogers, 2007). In diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), these processes are pathologically heightened, resulting in airway obstruction and impaired gas exchange (PubMed, 2021). Therapeutic strategies target these systems using bronchodilators to relax smooth muscle and mucolytics or anti-inflammatory agents to manage mucus production (PubChem, 2024). This term represents a complex physiological response system rather than a single discrete molecular target.

Mechanism of action

Drugs targeting these processes typically act as bronchodilators (beta-2 agonists), muscarinic antagonists, or mucolytics to alleviate airway obstruction (StatPearls, 2023).
