Overview

The multicellular immune system functions through a highly coordinated network of cell-cell contact and soluble mediators to protect the host from infection and malignancy. While this system is the focus of modern immunotherapy, the term itself refers to a broad physiological process rather than a single, discrete molecular target like a specific receptor or enzyme. Consequently, therapeutic agents are designed to modulate specific components of this system—such as TNF-alpha inhibitors or checkpoint blockades—rather than the system in its entirety. This entry is therefore classified as a biological mechanism or system description rather than a specific therapeutic target.
