Overview

ATP-binding cassette sub-family C member 2 (ABCC2), also known as multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2) or canalicular multispecific organic anion transporter (cMOAT), is a membrane-bound transporter protein that plays a critical role in the efflux of various endogenous and exogenous compounds from cells. It is predominantly expressed on the apical membrane of hepatocytes, renal proximal tubular cells, enterocytes and syncytiotrophoblasts. Its primary function is to mediate the export of conjugated organic anions, contributing significantly to detoxification. Mutations in ABCC2 are associated with Dubin-Johnson syndrome. Overexpression can contribute to multidrug resistance during chemotherapy.
