Overview

Multiple, non-specific skin and microbial biomolecules refers to a broad category of proteins, lipids, and structural components that serve as the site of action for non-selective topical agents. Unlike traditional therapeutic targets that involve specific receptor-ligand binding, these biomolecules are affected through non-discriminatory chemical or physical processes (StatPearls, 2023). For instance, antiseptics like ethanol and povidone-iodine work by denaturing a wide array of microbial proteins and disrupting lipid membranes, providing rapid antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi, and viruses (CDC, 2008). Skin protectants, such as petrolatum, interact with the skin's surface lipids and proteins to form a physical barrier that prevents transepidermal water loss and protects against external irritants (FDA, 21 CFR 347). Because these mechanisms are non-specific, these agents are effective against a broad range of organisms but can also cause localized irritation or delayed wound healing in human tissue if used at high concentrations (PubMed, PMC7149570). This target designation is generally considered a catch-all for agents that lack a single, defined molecular target.
