Multiple cellular proteins and enzymes is a generic classification used in pharmacology to describe the broad, non-specific interactions of certain chemical agents with a wide array of biological molecules. This designation is frequently applied to drugs that do not bind to a single receptor or enzyme but instead react chemically with various cellular components, such as DNA, structural proteins, and metabolic enzymes (DrugBank, 2024). For example, alkylating agents like cyclophosphamide or thiotepa form covalent bonds with nucleophilic sites across many different proteins and nucleic acids, leading to cell death (NCBI, 2023). Similarly, certain antiseptics and heavy metals are categorized this way because they cause widespread protein denaturation or oxidative stress rather than inhibiting a specific pathway (StatPearls, 2023). Because this term represents a collective group of targets rather than a single entity, it is generally considered a non-specific or multi-target mechanism of action in drug development. The lack of specificity associated with these targets often results in significant systemic toxicity and a narrow therapeutic window for the interacting drugs (PubMed, 2022).
