Overview

Multiple hair growth-related pathways refers to the integrated network of molecular signals, including Wnt/beta-catenin, Sonic Hedgehog (Shh), and Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP), that regulate the hair follicle cycle (PMID: 15710914). These pathways are responsible for the transition between the anagen (growth), catagen (regression), and telogen (resting) phases of hair development. Drugs such as minoxidil are often associated with these pathways because they exert pleiotropic effects, such as opening potassium channels and increasing the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), rather than targeting a single specific receptor (PMID: 14996087). Dysregulation of these signaling cascades is a primary driver of conditions like androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata, where the hair follicle's growth phase is significantly shortened (PMID: 25133473). Therapeutic strategies targeting these pathways aim to prolong the anagen phase or induce the reentry of telogen follicles into the growth cycle. Because this term encompasses a broad range of biological processes rather than a single molecular entity, it is considered a non-specific classification in pharmacological research.
