Overview

Multiple Helicobacter pylori and gastric targets refers to a collective set of biological entities targeted by combination therapies to treat H. pylori infections and related gastric disorders (StatPearls, 2023). This group encompasses bacterial targets, such as the enzyme urease, which allows the pathogen to survive the acidic stomach environment, and the 50S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis (PubMed, 2022). Host targets primarily consist of the H+/K+ ATPase (proton pump) located on the apical membrane of gastric parietal cells (NIH, 2024). By inhibiting the proton pump, drugs like omeprazole increase gastric pH, which not only promotes the healing of peptic ulcers but also prevents the acid-mediated degradation of antibiotics like amoxicillin and clarithromycin (Mayo Clinic, 2023). This synergistic multi-target approach is the clinical standard for treating gastritis and peptic ulcers, and it is critical for reducing the risk of H. pylori-associated gastric adenocarcinoma and MALT lymphoma (Nature Reviews Disease Primers, 2017).
