Overview

Multiple mitochondrial proteins refer collectively to the diverse set of proteins localized within mitochondria. These proteins are essential for mitochondrial structure, function, and biogenesis, and they participate in a wide array of cellular activities including ATP synthesis, metabolism of amino acids, lipids and nucleotides, regulation of apoptosis, maintenance of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), protein import/export mechanisms, membrane dynamics (fusion/fission), and more. Defects or mutations affecting various mitochondrial proteins can lead to impaired oxidative phosphorylation, metabolic disorders, neurological diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. These dysfunctions underlie many human pathologies including cancer and neurodegeneration.
