Multiple non-specific microbial macromolecules refers to the broad array of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids within microorganisms that are targeted by non-selective antimicrobial agents such as antiseptics and disinfectants (CDC, 2008). Unlike targeted antibiotics that inhibit specific enzymes like DNA gyrase or cell wall synthesis proteins, these agents cause widespread, catastrophic damage to the microbe's structural and functional components (StatPearls, 2023). For instance, alcohols and phenols denature essential proteins and disrupt lipid membranes, while oxidizing agents like hydrogen peroxide and iodine attack sulfhydryl groups and unsaturated fatty acids (StatPearls, 2023). This multi-targeted approach ensures efficacy against a wide spectrum of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and makes the development of resistance highly unlikely. However, the lack of specificity means these agents can also damage human host cells, which typically limits their clinical application to topical use on skin or wounds and the sterilization of inanimate surfaces (StatPearls, 2023).
