For example, antacids like magnesium hydroxide work by directly neutralizing gastric hydrochloric acid, while adsorbents like activated charcoal physically bind to a wide range of toxins and chemicals in the gastrointestinal tract to prevent their systemic absorption (StatPearls, 2023). Other substances in this category include osmotic laxatives that alter the water content of stool by creating an osmotic gradient and lubricants that facilitate passage through the intestines (NIH, 2023). Because this designation represents a functional grouping of disparate chemical reactions rather than a single biological entity, it is not considered a valid therapeutic target in the traditional sense. The lack of molecular specificity in these treatments often leads to clinical challenges, such as significant drug-drug interactions and the risk of systemic electrolyte disturbances (StatPearls, 2023).
