Overview

The term Multiple pathogenic antigens refers to a composite target category used in pharmacological databases to describe therapeutic agents, primarily vaccines, that incorporate a variety of distinct antigenic components to elicit a broad-spectrum immune response (ChEMBL, 2024). Rather than interacting with a single molecular entity like a specific receptor or enzyme, these agents present the immune system with multiple epitopes derived from one or more pathogens, such as viruses or bacteria (CDC, 2023). This approach is essential for addressing pathogens with high antigenic diversity or for providing simultaneous protection against multiple diseases, as seen in polyvalent or combination vaccines like MMR or DTaP (FDA, 2021). Additionally, this concept is applied in the development of multi-antigen cancer vaccines designed to target several tumor-associated antigens to prevent immune escape. By stimulating both humoral and cellular immunity against several targets at once, these therapies aim to prevent infection or malignancy and reduce the likelihood of resistance. However, the use of multiple antigens requires careful formulation to avoid antigenic interference, where the response to one component may diminish the response to others (WHO, 2020). In clinical practice, the efficacy of such treatments is typically monitored through serological biomarkers like antibody titers and neutralizing assays. This target classification thus serves as a functional grouping for complex immunologics rather than a specific biochemical target.
