Target intelligence / Profile preview
Multiple pathways and gene networks is a broad systems biology descriptor rather than a specific molecular target. According to standard definitions in drug discovery, a therapeutic target is typically a discrete biological entity, such as a protein or nucleic acid, whose activity can be modified by a drug to achieve a therapeutic effect (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2006). This term instead refers to the complex, interconnected web of signaling cascades and genetic regulatory circuits that coordinate cellular functions. While modern pharmacology often employs network pharmacology to understand how drugs affect these systems, the term itself encompasses too much information to be treated as a single target (CPT: Pharmacometrics & Systems Pharmacology, 2014). Because it lacks a specific binding site or a singular biochemical function, it cannot be assigned standard attributes like interacting drugs or specific mechanisms of action. It is essentially a conceptual grouping of various biological processes rather than a targetable molecule. In research contexts, this phrase is often used to describe the global impact of a drug or the multi-factorial nature of a disease (Science, 2002). Consequently, it does not meet the criteria for a canonical therapeutic target in a structured database.
