Overview

Multiple undefined antigens is a collective term used in pharmacological databases and clinical research to describe a target profile where a therapeutic agent, such as a whole-cell vaccine or cell lysate, is designed to elicit an immune response against a broad and non-specific array of markers (ChEMBL, 2024). This designation is typically applied when the exact molecular targets are either unknown, too numerous to list individually, or represent a complex mixture of proteins derived from tumor cells or pathogens (National Cancer Institute, 2023). In oncology, therapies targeting multiple undefined antigens aim to overcome tumor heterogeneity by training the immune system to recognize various epitopes, thereby reducing the likelihood of resistance through antigen loss (PubMed: 28603077). While this approach provides a comprehensive immune attack, it lacks the precision of targeted therapies directed at a single, well-defined protein (FDA, 2022). Consequently, the use of multiple undefined antigens is often associated with challenges in regulatory standardization and the potential for off-target effects if the antigens share epitopes with healthy tissues (StatPearls, 2023). This classification is essential for capturing the activity of complex biologicals like GVAX or autologous tumor vaccines in structured data formats.
