These agents often exert their effects by denaturing proteins, disrupting cell membranes, or causing widespread oxidative damage to both microbial and host cellular components. This multi-target approach is beneficial in preventing the development of antimicrobial resistance, as pathogens cannot easily bypass such generalized damage.
