Overview

The mumps virus (MuV) is the causative agent of mumps, a contagious viral disease characterized primarily by painful swelling of the parotid salivary glands. It belongs to the family Paramyxoviridae, genus Rubulavirus. The virus is an enveloped, non-segmented, negative-sense RNA virus. Transmission occurs via respiratory droplets or direct contact with saliva. Prevention is achieved through vaccination with the MMR vaccine.

Mechanism of action

The MMR vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against measles, mumps, and rubella viruses, providing protection against infection.
