Overview

Mumps orthorubulavirus antigen refers to the collective proteins of the mumps virus, a member of the Paramyxoviridae family, which are recognized by the host immune system [1]. The primary antigenic components include the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) and fusion (F) surface glycoproteins, as well as the internal nucleoprotein (N) [2]. These antigens are critical for the virus's ability to attach to host cells, fuse with the cell membrane, and replicate its single-stranded RNA genome [2]. In clinical practice, these antigens are the primary targets for live-attenuated vaccines, such as the Jeryl Lynn strain used in the MMR vaccine, which elicit protective neutralizing antibodies [3,4]. While there are currently no widely approved small-molecule antivirals specifically targeting these antigens, they remain focal points for diagnostic assays and research into fusion inhibitors or neuraminidase blockers [5]. Infection with the virus typically leads to parotitis, but can also cause more severe complications like meningitis or orchitis, making the antigenic stimulation of the immune system via vaccination a cornerstone of public health [3].
