The mumps virus fusion protein (MuV-F) is a class I viral fusion glycoprotein essential for the entry of the mumps virus into host cells. It mediates the fusion between the viral envelope and cellular membranes, enabling viral RNA to enter and infect host cells. The F protein is synthesized as an inactive precursor, F0, which is cleaved by host cell proteases into two subunits. This cleavage activates the protein for membrane fusion activity. The mature F protein facilitates both virus-cell and cell-cell membrane fusion, playing a critical role in viral entry and spread within tissues.
