Target intelligence / Profile preview
Encephalitis virus is a general term encompassing several distinct viral species that cause acute inflammation of the brain parenchyma, known as encephalitis (StatPearls, 2023). The most prominent members belong to the Flavivirus genus, including Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), and West Nile virus (WNV), which are primarily transmitted via mosquito or tick vectors (WHO, 2022; CDC, 2021). These viruses enter host cells through receptor-mediated endocytosis and replicate their RNA genomes within the cytoplasm, often leading to neuronal damage and severe neurological symptoms (PubMed, 2020). From a pharmacological perspective, the term is considered a pathogen category rather than a specific molecular target; however, drug development focuses on inhibiting specific viral proteins like the NS3 protease and NS5 polymerase (Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, 2020). Current clinical management relies heavily on preventative vaccines that target the viral envelope protein to elicit protective immunity, as effective small-molecule antivirals remain a significant therapeutic challenge (FDA, 2021).
Vaccines provide active immunity by inducing neutralizing antibodies against the viral envelope protein (CDC, 2021). Antiviral agents like Ribavirin act as guanosine analogs to interfere with viral RNA synthesis by targeting the viral polymerase (PubChem, 2024).
