Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor M1 (M1 mAChR)

Target
M1 mAChR
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor, Receptor
01

Overview

The muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M1 (M1 mAChR or CHRM1) is a G protein-coupled receptor that mediates cellular responses to acetylcholine. It is highly expressed in the central nervous system and plays a critical role in cognitive processes, glandular secretion, and synaptic modulation. It is a target for drug development for neurological disorders. Antagonism of M1 can cause delirium.

Mechanism of action

Agonists bind to the M1 receptor, activating Gq/11 proteins, leading to increased phospholipase C activity, IP3 production, and intracellular calcium levels. Antagonists block acetylcholine binding, inhibiting downstream signaling.
