Overview

MYB antisense RNA 1 (MYB-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the MYB gene locus on chromosome 6 in humans. Unlike protein-coding genes, MYB-AS1 does not encode a protein; instead, it likely plays a regulatory role at the RNA level. Through antisense interactions, it is believed to influence the expression of the MYB proto-oncogene, which is involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, and tumorigenesis. MYB-AS1 is implicated in diseases such as cancer due to its impact on MYB regulation, but it is not itself a therapeutic target nor an enzyme, receptor, or structural protein. No drugs are known to interact with MYB-AS1 directly, though its modulation could theoretically affect diseases where MYB is a key driver. \n\nNote: Be careful not to confuse MYB-AS1 (the lncRNA) with the protein-coding MYB transcription factor, which is a well-studied proto-oncogene and transcriptional regulator.

Mechanism of action

Not a direct therapeutic target; acts by regulating the expression of the MYB gene at the RNA level, primarily by antisense-mediated mechanisms

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (specifically, contributes to regulation of the neighboring protein-coding gene, MYB)May act in transcriptional regulation or chromatin modification (proposed mechanisms for lncRNAs in general)
04

Disease associations

Cancer (association through regulation of MYB oncogene expression)Other (research is ongoing for detailed roles in human physiology and pathology)
05

Biomarkers

Potential as a biomarker for disease states involving MYB overexpression, such as certain cancers, but not currently established in clinical practice
