Overview

MYREM (MYBPC2 cis regulating long non-coding RNA enhancer of myogenesis), also known as Charme, lncFAM, HSCHARME, and lncFAM71E1-2:2, is a muscle-specific long non-coding RNA that is highly expressed during early human myogenesis. It promotes skeletal muscle differentiation by recruiting the RNA-binding protein HNRNPL to regulatory regions (promoter/enhancer) of the MYBPC2 gene, thereby increasing transcription of MYBPC2, which encodes a myosin-binding protein important for sarcomere assembly and muscle contractility. MYREM expression is spatially localized to nuclei of mature myofibrils, predominantly in type II fibers, and serves as an RNA marker for these cells. Experimental evidence shows MYREM is not a classical therapeutic drug target but is a key regulator of muscle cell fate and hypertrophy[1][2][3][4][5][6]. There are no drugs currently known to target MYREM or utilize it as a therapeutic target.
