Overview

The MYCN gene encodes the N-MYC protein, a transcription factor belonging to the Myc family. It is crucial for embryonic development, regulating cell growth, division, differentiation, and apoptosis. MYCN is an oncogene, and its amplification or overexpression is associated with several cancers, most notably neuroblastoma. Mutations or deletions in MYCN are also associated with developmental disorders like Feingold Syndrome Type 1.

Mechanism of action

N-MYC acts as a transcription factor regulating the expression of target genes involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation. It dimerizes with other bHLH proteins to bind DNA and activate transcription. The antisense RNA transcript (MYCNOS or NCYM) stabilizes N-MYC protein levels.
