The mycobacterial envelope is a complex, multi-layered structure surrounding the cytosol of mycobacteria, including *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*. It provides shape, mechanical resistance, and protection, and plays a critical role in pathogenicity and drug resistance. The envelope consists of the plasma membrane, peptidoglycan, arabinogalactan, mycolic acids (forming the mycomembrane), and outer leaflet lipids/glycolipids such as PDIMs, PGLs, and GPLs, along with a capsule.
