Mycobacterial Respiratory Chain Enzymes

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Protein Complex
01

Overview

Mycobacterial respiratory chain enzymes are a set of membrane-bound protein complexes and associated electron carriers that drive oxidative phosphorylation in mycobacteria, including *Mycobacterium tuberculosis* (Mtb). These enzymes are essential for energy production, redox balance, and survival of the pathogen. The respiratory chain is highly branched and includes several key complexes: NADH dehydrogenase (Complex I), succinate dehydrogenase (Complex II), cytochrome bc1-aa3 supercomplex (Complex III-IV), cytochrome bd oxidase, and various quinones such as menaquinone. Nitric oxide (NO) produced by host immune cells can inhibit or damage components of the mycobacterial respiratory chain. Mtb has evolved mechanisms to evade or resist NO-mediated inhibition.
