Overview
Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) is an obligate pathogenic bacterium and the causative agent of Johne's disease in ruminants. It is suspected to play a role in certain human diseases, most notably Crohn’s disease. MAP is a gram-positive, facultative intracellular pathogen that infects macrophages within the gastrointestinal tract. Diagnosis can be challenging due to its slow growth and the existence of strains lacking typical markers.
