Mycobacterium bovis (attenuated) (BCG)

Target
BCG
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Live attenuated vaccine
01

Overview

Mycobacterium bovis is a slow-growing, aerobic, acid-fast bacterium whose attenuated form, primarily the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine strain, is used globally to prevent tuberculosis and other mycobacterial infections. Attenuation was achieved through repeated subcultivation, resulting in the loss of the RD1 genomic region, reducing virulence while retaining immunogenicity. BCG works by stimulating the immune system to develop protective immunity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is also used therapeutically for bladder cancer immunotherapy but has safety concerns such as risks of disseminated infection for the immunocompromised.
