Mycobacterium leprae antigens are a diverse set of molecular structures, primarily proteins and glycolipids, derived from the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae, which causes leprosy. These antigens elicit immune responses in infected individuals and serve as the basis for several diagnostic tools. The most notable antigens include cell wall proteins, membrane proteins, cytosolic antigens, and the phenolic glycolipid-1 (PGL-I). Some antigens such as ML0405, ML2331, and MAL5/MMP-I show high specificity and sensitivity as biomarkers for serological diagnosis. While not in themselves therapeutic targets (in contrast to essential enzymes like dihydropteroate synthase or RNA polymerase), they play key roles in infection, immune recognition, and pathology, and are actively used in immunodiagnostics for leprosy. Because “M. leprae antigens” is a non-specific, catch-all term, it is not strictly correct as a molecular target; appropriate specificity would name the individual antigen of interest (e.g., ML0405, PGL-I).
