The interaction between Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis, Mtb) and antigen-presenting cells (APCs) is a central event in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis. APCs—primarily macrophages and dendritic cells—are responsible for engulfing Mtb, processing its antigens, and presenting them to T lymphocytes via major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules. This process is essential for initiating adaptive immune responses that can contain or eliminate the infection, but Mtb has evolved strategies to evade or manipulate this process, leading to persistent infection.
