The ESAT6-CFP10 fusion protein is a recombinant antigen derived from two key proteins secreted by *Mycobacterium tuberculosis*: ESAT-6 (Early Secreted Antigenic Target 6 kDa) and CFP-10 (Culture Filtrate Protein 10 kDa). These proteins are encoded within the RD1 region of the *M. tuberculosis* genome and are not present in most non-tuberculous mycobacteria or in BCG vaccine strains, making them highly specific markers for *M. tuberculosis* infection. It is primarily used as a diagnostic reagent in skin tests and immunoassays to detect TB infection.
Stimulates T-cell mediated immune responses; induces IFN-gamma production upon recognition by sensitized T-cells.
