Overview

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a small, cell-wall-deficient bacterium belonging to the class Mollicutes, recognized as a primary cause of community-acquired pneumonia (StatPearls, 2023). Because it lacks a peptidoglycan layer, it is inherently resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics such as penicillins and cephalosporins (CDC, 2022). The bacterium adheres to the host's respiratory epithelium via a complex attachment organelle and produces the community-acquired respiratory distress syndrome (CARDS) toxin, which triggers inflammation and airway hyperreactivity (PubMed, PMID: 24501093). Therapeutic strategies focus on inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis using macrolides or tetracyclines, or targeting DNA replication with fluoroquinolones (NIH, 2023). While M. pneumoniae is the focus of therapeutic efforts, it is classified as a pathogen rather than a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme. Consequently, the term "target" in this context refers to the organism as a whole or its specific internal components like the 50S ribosomal subunit.
