Myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG), also known as Siglec-4, is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein predominantly found in the periaxonal membranes of Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS). MAG plays a crucial role in glial-axonal interactions, contributing to both the maintenance and stability of myelinated axons. It also inhibits neurite outgrowth after CNS injury. Clinically, autoantibodies against MAG are associated with certain forms of peripheral neuropathy.
