Overview

Myelin-associated oligodendrocyte basic protein (MOBP) is a small, highly basic, cytoplasmic protein expressed exclusively by oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system after birth. It constitutes one of the most abundant proteins in CNS myelin, is predicted to play a structural role in the compaction or stabilization of the myelin sheath, and may interact with membrane phospholipids. MOBP arises from multiple splice variants, all primarily expressed in oligodendrocytes. Its functional importance is supported by its timing in development and localization to myelinated CNS regions, although knockout studies show that its loss does not lead to overt myelination defects. MOBP contains immunodominant epitopes implicated in animal models of autoimmune encephalomyelitis and may contribute to the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis[1][2][3][7][8].
