Target intelligence / Profile preview
Myelin basic protein (MBP) is a highly abundant, multifunctional protein that plays a central role in the structure and function of myelin sheaths in the nervous system. It is essential for maintaining the correct structure of myelin by mediating adhesion between cytosolic surfaces of compacted myelin layers. MBP also interacts with actin, tubulin, Ca²⁺/calmodulin complexes, clathrin, and SH3-domain proteins, and can be found in immune-related organs. Altered post-translational modification patterns of MBP, especially increased citrullination, are associated with demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS).
