Overview

Myelin basic protein (MBP)-specific autoreactive T cells are a subset of immune cells that recognize and respond to MBP, a key component of the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. These T cells are implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and other demyelinating autoimmune diseases, where they contribute to inflammation and destruction of myelin. They can be both CD4+ (helper) and CD8+ (cytotoxic) subsets and typically exhibit a pro-inflammatory phenotype producing cytokines such as TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma. Activation may occur due to molecular mimicry. Strategies such as "T cell vaccination" use attenuated autologous MBP-reactive clones to induce tolerance/deplete pathogenic populations.
