The myelin basic protein-specific T cell receptor (MBP-specific TCR) is a type of T cell receptor that recognizes peptides derived from myelin basic protein (MBP), a key component of the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. These receptors are primarily studied in the context of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), where autoreactive T cells target MBP, leading to demyelination and neuroinflammation. Activation of these autoreactive T cells can be triggered by molecular mimicry. Engineered regulatory T cells expressing an exogenous MBP-specific TCR have demonstrated suppressive activity against pathogenic effector responses both in vitro and in vivo models.
