Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) is a CNS-specific glycoprotein expressed on the surface of oligodendrocytes and the outermost layer of myelin sheaths. It plays a role in myelin structure and integrity, and is a major target of autoantibodies in autoimmune demyelinating diseases like MS, NMOSD and ADEM. Detection of anti-MOG antibodies is diagnostically relevant. While MOG knockout mice do not show severe phenotypes under normal conditions, its role as an autoantigen makes it a key therapeutic target for interventions aimed at preventing or treating demyelinating diseases.
Target of autoantibodies, leading to complement-mediated demyelination and oligodendrocyte damage. Antibody therapies targeting immune cells involved in MOG-Ab production may be used.
