Myelin proteins are a diverse group of proteins essential for the formation, maintenance, and function of the myelin sheath in the central and peripheral nervous systems. They are crucial for insulating axons and enabling rapid nerve impulse conduction. Major myelin proteins include Proteolipid Protein (PLP), Myelin Basic Protein (MBP), and Myelin Protein Zero (P0). Many myelin proteins are intrinsically disordered or contain intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs), allowing for dynamic interactions within the myelin membrane. Alterations in expression levels or post-translational modifications can disrupt normal myelin sheath formation and function, leading to demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
