Myelination promotion is a term used to describe the enhancement or stimulation of the process by which oligodendrocytes form and wrap myelin sheaths around axons, thereby facilitating rapid nerve impulse conduction in the central nervous system[1][2][3][4][5]. This process is modulated by numerous molecular signals, cellular interactions (including with astrocytes and neurons), and environmental factors such as neuronal activity and growth factors. Myelination abnormalities contribute to neurodegenerative and demyelinating diseases, making the promotion of myelination a therapeutic goal in conditions like multiple sclerosis. However, "myelination promotion" itself is not a discrete molecular target, receptor, or druggable entity, but a complex biological endpoint resulting from many interacting pathways.
Various mechanisms, including regulation of oligodendrocyte precursor cell differentiation, modulation of signaling pathways such as Notch, growth factor signaling, and neuronal activity-induced signaling.
