Myeloid progenitor cells, also known as common myeloid progenitors (CMPs), are a key intermediate cell type in hematopoiesis. They arise from hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow and serve as precursors for erythrocytes, megakaryocytes, granulocytes, monocytes/macrophages, mast cells, and dendritic cells. Their primary function is to maintain homeostasis by replenishing mature myeloid effector cells, ensuring robust immune surveillance and rapid response during infection or injury. Dysfunctions in CMP populations are implicated in diseases like myelodysplastic syndromes and leukemias. Recombinant CSFs can be used to stimulate myeloid cell production after chemotherapy.
