Myeloid zinc finger protein 1 (MZF1) is a sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factor. It regulates genes involved in hematopoietic differentiation, cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, invasion, and oncogenesis. MZF1 functions both as a transactivator and transrepressor. Aberrant expression contributes to leukemogenesis and other hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. Its dual role in cancer depends on cellular context and interacting partners. Phosphorylation and SUMOylation modulate its activity.
