Target intelligence / Profile preview
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a heme-containing peroxidase enzyme primarily found in neutrophils. It plays a key role in the innate immune response by generating potent oxidants like hypochlorous acid to kill pathogens. However, excessive or misdirected MPO activity contributes to inflammatory diseases and cardiovascular disease by causing oxidative damage. MPO activity can also be modulated by plasma proteins.
Inhibition of MPO activity can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation.
