Overview

Myo-inositol-dependent neuronal signalling refers to the cellular processes in neurons that rely on myo-inositol, a carbocyclic sugar alcohol, as a key molecule for signal transduction and synaptic function. Myo-inositol serves as a precursor for phosphoinositides and other inositol-containing compounds that are essential for neuronal development, synaptic activity, and plasticity. Neurons depend on myo-inositol uptake from the extracellular environment via specific transporters such as HMIT. Upon neuronal activation, HMIT is translocated to the plasma membrane, increasing myo-inositol uptake necessary for sustained signalling. Myo-inositol is used to generate various phosphoinositide species involved in membrane trafficking, synapse formation, and signal transduction pathways regulating exocytosis and endocytosis. Disruption can impair these processes, potentially contributing to neurodevelopmental disorders.
