Overview

The mitochondrial membrane in myocardial (heart muscle) cells is a critical structure that supports the high energy demands of cardiac tissue. Mitochondria occupy about one-third of the volume in cardiomyocytes and are responsible for producing over 95% of cellular ATP, as well as regulating redox status, calcium homeostasis, and lipid synthesis. The mitochondrial membrane system consists of two main membranes: the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM), which serves as a barrier and communication interface with the cytosol, and the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM), which houses the electron transport chain, ATP synthase, and various transport proteins essential for oxidative phosphorylation. Key components include VDACs, ANT, cardiolipin, and the MICOS complex. Alterations or dysfunctions in myocardial mitochondrial membranes are implicated in heart failure and ischemia-reperfusion injury.
