Overview

Myocardial contraction refers to the process by which heart muscle (myocardium) generates force and shortens, enabling the heart to pump blood throughout the body. This process is a fundamental aspect of cardiac function and is driven by complex interactions at molecular, cellular, and tissue levels. The contraction of cardiac muscle occurs via the sliding filament model, similar to skeletal muscle. Effective myocardial contraction ensures adequate cardiac output for tissue perfusion. Alterations in contractile proteins or regulatory mechanisms can lead to impaired myocardial function seen in various cardiovascular diseases.
