Myocardial fatty acid metabolism refers to the process by which free fatty acids (FFAs) are taken up by cardiac cells and undergo beta-oxidation within mitochondria to generate energy required for the heart’s continuous contractile activity. In a healthy adult heart, 60–90% of ATP production is derived from the oxidation of long-chain fatty acids, making them the predominant energy substrate compared to carbohydrates, ketone bodies, and amino acids. Alterations in myocardial fatty acid metabolism are implicated in various forms of heart disease. Modulating myocardial FAO has been explored therapeutically.
